Welcome!

The Sisters of Salomé is a Belly Dance Collective comprised of 10 women from the New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Hammond areas. The effect of these dancers is both breathtaking and mesmerizing. The Sisters are known to incorporate the entrancing sights and sounds of the Middle East, India, Spain, Persia and North Africa to create an exotic atmosphere. Every performance is an inspiring and entertaining experience. The members of this dance collective enjoy the challenge of fusing the old with the new, exploring and adapting folkloric and modern influences; while creating a constantly evolving art form that is as individual as the women performing it and indicative of the New Orleans Art Scene. They are fresh, new and rumored to be the most progressive dance collective in the region.

Belly Dance has become a very popular and very positive form of exercise for many women around the country. It not only strengthens the body physically but many women gain greater self confidence and develop a positive view of their bodies. Belly Dance, unlike Ballet and some other very Western styles of dance, does not put emphasis on size, shape or age. The dance form comes from an evolution of communal dances across the Middle East and with it comes a strong lineage. Setting the stage for bonding, friendship and community support. Several members of the Sisters collective teach in their respective towns.

The Sisters of Salomé can be seen around town dancing at a variety of venues. They have been appearing regularly at Jamila’s Café on Maple Street for many years now. Kryss, Sisters’ Director, began dancing at Jamila’s in 1995, before there was a Sisters of Salomé. Byblo’s Restaurant on Magazine has had up to 3 members of the collective adding entertainment to their “Belly Up to Byblo’s” Thursday since 2002. The Summer of 2004, brought the Sisters to the Hookah Café on Frenchman. Pyramid Café opened on Decatur Street October 2004 and kicking things off with Belly Dancing twice a week with a Sisters of Salome performer. In Baton Rouge, belly dancers appear regularly at Arzi’s on Government Street.
